Population Growth & Density in Albuquerque and New Mexico

One of the responsibilities municipalities have in taking care of their residents is ensuring that infrastructure and amenities are adequate to keep up with expected population growth and demographic changes that invariably occur over time. According to the Mid-Region Council of Governments of New Mexico, the population of Albuquerque is expected to crest one million residents by 2021. One of the interesting changes expected in the city is the eventual growth “upward” rather than outward.

Currently, Albuquerque is a large city, but it’s not a particularly dense metropolitan area. The city is spread out over more than 189 square miles at an elevation of 5,312 feet with just under 560,00 inhabitants living within the city limits. Overall, the metro area already has around 830,000 residents. Local groups like 1,000 Friends of New Mexico suggest that the Albuquerque area must ensure sustainable building practices are used as the city increases its housing and commercial development to accommodate the new residents.

The Mid-Region Council of Governments of New Mexico shares further:

“With so much construction… Southwestern cities like Albuquerque show a greater willingness to explore new land-use and building techniques, such as the emerging trend of creating environmentally-friendly building codes.”

With an average one-way commute reaching 21.3 minutes in Albuquerque according to Census Bureau numbers, residents are concerned with the hurdles Albuquerque may face as it grows and experiences increases in traffic and the number of cars hitting the roads each morning for rush hour traffic.

To accommodate new residents, Albuquerque will need to increase its available housing, as well as ensure adequate growth of new business and commercial development. According to Albuquerque Business First, the city has seen quite a lot of activity regarding new development with several major construction projects expected to see a conclusion in 2017 or 2018.

Two recent projects to reach a point of completion include the Valencia High School Performing Arts Center, which is an $8.5 million performing arts center designed to accommodate up to 602 people in the theater. A 3,000 sq. ft. stage and set of brand new audio and acoustic equipment have also been included with construction. Another new venue will be la Madeleine, which is a French restaurant project costing $1.2 million at a size of 4,918 sq. ft. The owners of the establishment expect it to bring around 65 jobs to Albuquerque.
